Women in Transition is a collection of stories about individual women who are facing moments of profound significance in their lives. Among them is Maggie, who is cleaning out her big house in order to move from her “empty nest”; Ruth, who has Alzheimer’s disease; Kim, a young mother with AIDS; and Joan, who is able to come to terms with a lost love and move forward in her life. There is also a nameless woman, one in seven, who has breast cancer.
Much of the material for Women in Transition is drawn from the author’s personal experiences as a physician. There are also stories that include the author’s remembrances of growing up in Italy and the challenges of living in two worlds, Italy and the United States.
Underlying all of Margaret Brisco’s work is a spiritual perception that finds meaning in everyday life, while, at the same time, seeing beyond it. Thus the reader is always led along a path of hope, even when confronting such stark realities as illness, loss, aging, and death.
